Yoga for Aging Bodies and Minds
with Maureen Rae

Sunday, October 14, 2018
1:30 -  5:00pm
Fee: $89 + HST

Fitness and Yoga professionals are reporting a huge surge in the number of active seniors attending classes. We are faced with instructing ages from 50-90! And all in the same class! Students are educated, and they want to be physically active as a deterrent to some of the realities of older age.

Sore wrists, knees. Aching hips. Curled up fingers and toes. Loss of eyesight and hearing. Struggles with balance and agility...and that's just a starting point!

Struggles with hypertension, osteoporosis, depression and early-onset dementia– and more – can be alleviated by practicing yoga...but typically not the yoga that we learned in our basic teacher training courses.

The focus of our time together will be to explore:

• safe and effective poses, and pose sequences;
• fun props, chairs for those students who need them, and
• breathing techniques that are appropriate for this age group.

We will also discuss loneliness, feelings of isolation and of being unloved, and how connection with the group can help. According to an Amsterdam-based study of the elderly, reported int he Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry in 2013, “Loneliness increases the risk of dementia in older adults by as much as 64%.”

Teacher Certificate supplied! Full manual. Limited to 15 students. Register early!

The Art of Eating Mindfully

with Caryl Ayearst, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Master NLP Coach and Hypnotherapist, Reiki Practitioner

Saturday, October 13, 2018
1-3:30pm
Tuition: $24 + HST

This talk will be about the art of eating mindfully. There is so much noise out there about what is good for you and what isn't. The discussion on food always seems to focus on what we eat with less attention on how we eat. This may be surprising that really simple eating habits can have powerful health habits. Changing our attitudes and practices around meals and mealtime rituals can be just as important as what we actually put in our mouth.
Learn to...
• reconnect deeply with the experience of eating and enjoying food
• gratitude about nourishing the body
• that eating mindfully can make you feel better and have more energy
• how it can improve your gut health

Qi Gong

with Maria Quattrocchi, Ph.D, RYT

Sat. Oct 20 - Dec. 1, 2018
1-2:15pm
Tuition: $125 + HST

Qigong (“chee-GONG”) often referred to as Chinese yoga, is an ancient practice of moving and cultivating energy. When we begin practising qigong we learn how to balance internal energy to heal ourselves physically, emotionally and spiritually. When we move in a slow, rhythmic fashion while focusing on breathing, we begin healing on all levels since healing can’t take place when we’re restless, stressed, or fearful. Each qigong movement is meditation in motion, and a seated meditation begins each class similar to yoga. Qi means energy, vitality, life force, and gong means work or to cultivate, so a literal translation of qigong is energy workout or cultivating energy. We will be learning several warm up exercises called silk reeling, and a set of 18 movements called Sibashi 1. In Sibashi 1 each movement is repeated 6 to 12 times to achieve a flowing state. The beauty of qigong is that it can be done seated or standing and anyone may take classes regardless of physical challenges.
