February Yoga Teaching of the Month : The Tradition of Viniyoga
The term viniyoga in Sanskrit literally means “application” and “to use” or “employ.” Viniyoga™ is a form of yoga that focuses on using breath to propel movement. The practice is less concerned with proper positioning than typical yoga styles and more focused on the specific effect each pose has on the body. It can be a highly personalized experience, with a specific routine of poses and movements devised by an instructor for one-on-one lessons with a student. The method can also be used in a classroom setting, however, which we do very effectively in our ‘Gentle Yoga’ classes which happen on Tuesday mornings, and on Wednedsay and Thursday evenings. Though it is meant to accommodate students at all levels of ability and health, the practice has proven to be particularly effective as physical therapy, and especially for patients with lower back pain, shoulder and knee pain, and those with elevated levels of stress, and/or depression.
Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (November 18, 1888 – February 28, 1989) – the grandfather of hatha yoga as we know it in North America today – documented his lifetime experiences with yoga very well. He was an ayurvedic healer, a scholar and is widely thought of as one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century. The revival of hatha yoga (the physical postures of yoga) is credited to him, and he is considered to be the architect of the vinyasa style of hatha yoga.
While he is revered in other parts of the world as a yogi, in India Krishnamacharya is mainly known as a healer who drew from both ayurvedicand yogic traditions to restore health and well-being to those he treated, thus bringing into being Viniyoga.
Underlying all of Krishnamacharya’s teachings was the principle “Teach what is appropriate for an individual.”
He saw appropriate yoga practice as a journey, associating the spirit of the practice with the natural progression of a day – separated into three stages: the Sunrise stage 0 – 20 years, Mid-day 20 – 50 years, and Sunset 50 +. And the yoga practiced at each stage of life – and the physical ability of each student - should reflect the stage at which the student was currently living.
At our studio and school of yoga, over the next 4 months we are offering a full variety of workshops related to the Viniyoga Tradition: Breathwork, Meditation, Yoga for Older Adults, and a wonderful 2-day session entitled The Timeless Teachings of Yoga where the main focus is on the tradition of Viniyoga. Deepen your practice by attending any of these workshops to learn how to live in your body with ease. For more information, read on, or give us a call or visit our website, please. We have flyers in the studio with more information.
“Inhale and God approaches you.
Hold the inhalation and God remains with you.
Exhale and you approach God.
Hold the exhalation and surrender to God.”
Sri T. Krishnamacharya
